pH level is equally important. A healthy hair cuticle sits naturally at a pH of about 4.5 to 5.5. When we apply a restorative treatment formulated at an optimized pH of 3.5 to 4.5, it forces the cuticle to close tightly and locks the repairing peptides inside the shaft.

Comparing Top Salon Hair Treatments: Keratin vs. Bond Builders

Choosing between keratin smoothing and bond building treatments depends entirely on whether your hair needs surface-level frizz control or deep structural repair. You have to match the solution to the exact type of damage you are dealing with.

Bond Builders like K18 or Olaplex target the inner cortex. They are the right solution for hair that has been bleached, heavily highlighted, or chemically relaxed. If your hair is breaking off or feels mushy and gummy when wet, bond builders actively bridge the broken disulfide bonds inside your hair shaft.

Keratin Smoothing Treatments target the outer cuticle. Keratin is ideal when your primary struggle is frizz, particularly during our humid Massachusetts summers. We focus on safe, effective smoothing that seals the cuticle without relying on harsh chemicals.

That means severely damaged high-porosity hair often floats at the top of the glass because of the sebum coating. You end up with the exact opposite reading from reality. That single error sends clients toward the wrong products for months.

In the salon, I assess porosity three ways. The first is the slide test, running a finger from tip to root along the shaft. Rough, raised texture means high porosity. Glassy smoothness means low porosity.

The second is the snap test. A wet strand that stretches then returns has good elasticity and balanced porosity. A strand that snaps immediately is protein-deficient, and a strand that stretches without returning is over-moisturized and protein-deficient.

The third is processing time observation. High-porosity hair absorbs color and treatments faster than expected. Low-porosity hair resists penetration and requires heat activation to open the cuticle enough for product to enter.

Emma came to me after eight months of using low-porosity products based on a float test result. Her hair had been floating at the top of the glass every time she tested it. 

But when I ran the slide test and snap test in the salon, her cuticle was severely raised and her mid-lengths snapped immediately with almost no stretch.
