Best Hair Salon in Foxborough, MA | Kimberly Messing Hair Design
Looking for a hair salon that Foxborough clients actually drive to on purpose? Kimberly Messing Hair Design has operated out of 533 Washington Street in Braintree since 1986, and a meaningful share of the chairs on any given day belong to clients who live closer to Gillette Stadium than to Washington Street. Nine stylists, each with a defined specialty, work under one roof: cutting, color, curl, extensions, alternative hair, and finishing services.
38+ Years of Continuous Ownership | One Washington Street Address Since 1986
Nearly Four Decades Before Anyone Was Searching Online For This
Foxborough's name gets attached to a stadium that draws people from every corner of New England on a Sunday. Kim Messing built something with a smaller footprint but a similar kind of staying power: a single salon, on a single street, that clients have kept returning to since Ronald Reagan's second term. Long before search engines existed, before "best salon near me" was a phrase anyone typed, Kim was already building the reputation that now shows up in that search.
She opened her first chair here in 1986 and has spent the years since turning it into a full working salon with nine specialists, each responsible for a different discipline rather than a little bit of everything. Kim herself is a certified colorist, credentialed through advanced coursework in formulation, correction, and color theory that the overwhelming majority of working stylists never pursue. She's also certified through Hot Heads for tape-in extension work and keeps her training current with Goldwell, Redken, Keratin Complex, and Olaplex, because the chemistry behind hair color doesn't sit still and neither does she.
What that means day to day: every stylist on this floor trained under Kim or beside her, so the standard doesn't dip depending on whose chair you land in. It's a small operation built with the discipline of a much bigger one.

Why Foxborough Clients Choose This Salon Over Something Closer
Nobody drives past three or four salons without a reason. Here's what actually brings Foxborough clients to Washington Street:
- Every stylist owns a lane. Instead of a floor full of generalists, this team is split into specialties: correction, curl, blonding, extensions, texture, and more. You're paired with whoever actually handles your specific need, not whoever's next available.
- Consultations aren't rushed or skipped. Before a single tool touches your hair, someone sits down with you and asks real questions about what you want and what your hair can actually support.
- The owner still works the floor. Kim isn't a name on a sign. She's in the building, coloring hair, training her team, and personally handling the more complicated correction and extension cases.
- Longevity that shows up in the results. Nearly forty years in one location means this team has seen essentially every hair problem twice, and has a real plan for most of them.
- An operation that thinks about its footprint. Day-to-day choices here, from product selection to how the space is run, are made with some awareness of environmental impact, not just as a marketing note.

Hair Color
Nothing here comes premixed off a shelf. Formulas are built around your undertone, your hair's chemical history, and the season you're walking in during, because New England swings hard enough between July and February that a single formula rarely works year-round.
Single Process Color — $75. Even, rich, all-over color.
Double Process Color — $120. A bigger shift: lift the base, then tone it.
Partial Foil — $148. Dimension concentrated where it's most visible.
Full Foil — $185. Complete, multi-tonal coverage.
Balayage — $220. Hand-painted, soft-growing color, one of the most requested services here.
Custom Foil — $22 add-on. Targeted brightening layered onto another service.
Color Balance — $37. Correction for tone that's gone uneven or faded.
Up-Do — $100. Event-ready styling built to hold.

Kim Messing — Owner and Master Colorist
38+ Years of Experience — Custom Color, Extensions, Formulation

Jackie Shaughnessy — Senior Stylist, Cutting and Curl Specialist
38 Years — Cutting, Curly Hair, Toppers

Maureen's foil placement is precise enough that other stylists study her technique directly. Her balayage grows out softly instead of leaving a visible line.

What a Visit Here Actually Feels Like
A Braintree Salon With Reach Into Foxborough
To be direct about geography: this salon is located at 533 Washington Street in Braintree, not in Foxborough itself. What draws Foxborough clients isn't proximity, it's the specific combination of specialist depth and a consultation-first approach that's harder to find at a salon that's merely nearby. It's an honest short trip from our Washington Street studio, and it's a trip clients keep making once they've experienced the difference in how a consultation is handled here.
New England Weather Doesn't Care About Your Color Appointment
Four real seasons means four different hair problems throughout the year. Summer humidity works moisture into the cuticle and turns smooth hair frizzy by afternoon. Winter dries everything out, hair included, and dulls color faster than clients expect. Spring arrives wet and unpredictable, which is rough timing for color that hasn't fully set. Fall becomes repair season, undoing whatever the summer did and shifting everyone toward warmer, deeper tones. Every stylist here factors in whichever season you're walking through when they're building your formula or planning your cut.
Some Trips Are Planned Around a Game
Event traffic is part of the rhythm here too. Some Foxborough-area clients time appointments around a Patriots game, a concert, or another event at the stadium, wanting a blowout or a color refresh before a day that'll have them photographed more than usual. It's a small but real slice of the calendar, and the team treats it the same as any other booking: with a real conversation first.

Nine Specialists, One Roof: A Closer Look at the Team
A quick bio only tells you so much. Here's the fuller picture of the people who'll actually be handling your hair.
Kim Messing, Owner and Master Colorist
Kim has spent 38-plus years learning how color actually behaves on real hair, not the version in a training manual. She holds an advanced color certification that requires testing across formulation, theory, and correction work, a bar most colorists never attempt to clear, and she's renewed her commitment to ongoing education every year since opening the doors in 1986. Rather than reaching for a preset formula, she mixes every color from scratch, accounting for your natural pigment, your hair's porosity, the mineral content of your water, and how you actually want your hair to behave in the weeks between visits.
She's also certified through Hot Heads for tape-in extension application, a skill she's refined across an enormous number of installs, and it's frequently clients managing thinning, postpartum shedding, or age-related density loss who end up in her chair for it. When a color job has gone sideways somewhere else, Kim is usually the one who fixes it. Outside her own chair, she trains the rest of the team and keeps her own education current through Goldwell, Redken, Keratin Complex, and Olaplex.
Jackie Shaughnessy, Senior Stylist and Cutting Specialist
Jackie has been cutting hair for 38 years, and clients book her months in advance because her cuts grow out cleanly instead of losing shape within a few weeks. Her specific expertise is curly hair: she cuts it dry, curl by curl, working with how each individual curl actually falls rather than guessing at a wet-cut shape that won't hold once it dries. She also leads the alternative hair and topper program, handling those consultations with the same care she brings to a precision cut.
Maureen Lamie, Master Stylist and Foiling Specialist
With 25-plus years in dimensional color, Maureen is the person other stylists watch to learn foil placement. She maps face shape and natural growth pattern before a single foil goes in, which is the difference between highlights that look generic and highlights that look built for you specifically. Her balayage work is hand-painted to avoid the harsh regrowth line that comes from a rushed application, making her the natural choice for clients who want dimension that ages gracefully between appointments.
Janet Layden, Color Correction Specialist
Janet takes on the cases nobody else wants to touch: a box-dye mistake, highlights that turned brassy, a tone that refuses to lift evenly, years of root touch-ups that have left visible banding. Correction work demands real technical fluency, in lift levels, in toners, in bonding chemistry, and Janet has spent her career getting deep into all three. Her non-correction work is equally strong, particularly layered, dimensional color that reads as effortless.
Laura Blaikie, Blonding Specialist
There's a meaningful gap between a stylist who can do highlights and one who specializes in blonding specifically, and Laura sits firmly in the second group. Her lightening work is bright without looking flat, using a blend of foil and hand-painting to avoid the striped or brassy results that come from a less careful approach. Clients moving from naturally dark hair to a significantly lighter shade seek her out because she knows how to get there without compromising the hair's integrity, running Olaplex and K18 through every step of the process.
Alicia Hayward, DevaCurl Certified Curl Specialist
Alicia trained directly with the DevaCurl program and has spent years applying that technique to curly, wavy, and coily hair textures that a lot of stylists still cut incorrectly. If your history with curly cuts has been mostly disappointing, she's the one to see: she works dry, curl by curl, after a real conversation about your pattern, your routine, and what you're actually trying to wear day to day.
Emma Browning, Contemporary Cuts and Vivid Color
Emma brings the freshest technical energy on the floor, handling the textured shags, French bobs, and layered cuts clients bring in from their phones, always with a solid structural foundation underneath so the shape actually holds its wear. She also does the salon's vivid and fashion color work, using Pulp Riot and similar professional lines chosen specifically because they hold their tone longer than typical fashion colors.
Judy, Senior Stylist and Blowout Specialist
Judy has styled hair for 25-plus years and is fluent in the full range of classic finishing techniques, from pin curls to voluminous, event-ready waves. She's the one clients book ahead of weddings and formal nights specifically because her styles hold up under pressure. Her cutting work is equally in demand among clients who want a polished, low-maintenance shape.
Kat, Texture and Updo Specialist
Kat handles the styling that goes beyond a standard curling-iron finish: braids, updos, twists, and ponytails engineered to survive a long night on their feet. Brides and event clients book her specifically for that durability. She's also steadily building a client base in color work, especially with brunette clients looking for dimensional, polished results.

Our Approach: One Stylist, Undivided, Every Time
A lot of salons run on volume: several color services processing at once, one stylist splitting attention across three chairs, clients moved through as quickly as the schedule allows. This salon runs differently by design. Your stylist works with you and only you, from the opening consultation through the final blowdry. Nobody hands your color off mid-process to an assistant who's meeting you for the first time.
The upside is practical, not just pleasant: full attention produces more precise work, appointment after appointment. It also means the consultation is treated as a real conversation rather than a formality. If a look you're describing won't actually suit your hair's current condition, you'll be told that honestly, along with what would work instead. If your hair needs some health restored before it can handle a bigger change, that gets said too, upfront, before you're in the chair. The goal every time is a result both you and your stylist are genuinely satisfied with.
The Hair Science Behind Every Consultation
Hair doesn't exist in a vacuum. Water quality, humidity, coastal air, and a genuine New England winter all leave marks on it, and a good consultation accounts for all of that instead of treating your hair like it exists in a lab.
Hard Water and Mineral Buildup
Much of Massachusetts deals with hard water, which deposits calcium, iron, and magnesium onto the hair shaft over time. The result shows up as dullness, brassy tones in lightened hair, color that fades faster than it should, and shampoo that seems to stop working after a few months. Chelating treatments and the right take-home products can reverse most of that buildup.
Humidity and Frizz
New England summers get humid enough to introduce frizz even in hair that's never had the problem before, since excess moisture works its way into the shaft and lifts the cuticle. Fixing it usually means a cut that's designed to work with humidity rather than fight it, the right sealing and anti-humidity products, and in some cases a smoothing treatment to address the underlying frizz pattern directly.
Salt Air and Coastal Exposure
Time spent near the water, whether that's the South Shore coastline or a summer at the Cape, means salt exposure, and salt is drying. It can leave color looking dull or slightly gray-toned. Clients who spend a lot of time near salt water benefit from a heavier moisture routine and shampoos that lift salt residue without stripping color out along with it.
Winter Damage
Cold outdoor air, dry indoor heat, and hats and scarves rubbing against hair all take a toll during a New England winter. That combination shows up as static, breakage from friction, and general dryness. Home-care recommendations here shift every fall specifically to get ahead of it before the worst of winter arrives.
Adjusting Color by Season
The same color reads differently depending on the light around it. A bright, cool blonde that feels harsh under gray winter skies can look exactly right in summer sun, and a deep, warm brunette that feels heavy in July can feel elegant by December. Plenty of clients here adjust their tone twice a year for exactly this reason, and it's a normal part of the conversation with any stylist on the team.
What a Free Consultation Actually Covers
Every new client gets a free consultation before any service is booked, with no obligation attached. It typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and covers real ground rather than functioning as a sales pitch:
- Hair history: what chemical services your hair has been through and how it responded.
- Current condition: an honest assessment of health, porosity, and what it can realistically handle right now.
- Daily routine: how often you wash, what products you use, and how much time you actually spend styling.
- Lifestyle factors: exercise, swimming, sun exposure, and anything else that affects your hair day to day.
- Visual references: photos of what you're hoping for, and just as important, photos of what you want to avoid.
- A realistic outcome: what's achievable today versus what might need to happen over multiple visits.
- Cost and timing: a clear number and a clear time estimate before you commit to anything.
- A maintenance plan: what it'll actually take to keep the result looking right until your next visit.
Clients regularly say this conversation alone gives them more clarity than years of appointments elsewhere ever did.
Serving the Foxborough Community
Foxborough carries a level of regional recognition that most towns its size don't have, largely because it's home to Gillette Stadium, where the New England Patriots play and where concerts and other major events draw crowds from across New England. That's the one specific fact worth naming here, and it's a real part of the town's identity. Beyond that, this is general South Shore and Metrowest territory: four distinct seasons, a mix of commuter and local traffic, and a genuine, workable distance from our Washington Street studio in Braintree. We don't claim to be your neighborhood salon. We're a short drive away, and the clients who make that drive tend to keep making it for years.
Is the Drive From Foxborough Worth It?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer depends on what you're looking for. If you want a quick, no-frills trim from whoever's available, there's probably something closer. If you want a colorist with real advanced credentials, a team where nine different people each specialize in something specific instead of doing a little of everything, and a consultation process that actually slows down before anything happens to your hair, that combination is harder to find nearby. Clients who make the trip once tend to keep making it, often for years, because the relationship with a stylist who genuinely knows their hair is difficult to replace.
The practical side is easy: free parking on site, evening availability Tuesday through Thursday, and Saturday hours for anyone working a standard week.
What Clients Book Us for Most
Color leads the list by a wide margin, especially balayage, foiling, and correction work. Between Kim's formulation expertise, Maureen's foiling, Janet's correction skill, and Laura's blonding specialty, that's four different specialists covering color alone, which is more depth than most salons offer in an entire department.
Cutting comes in close behind. Clients with curly hair specifically seek out Jackie or Alicia for dry-cutting expertise. Clients who want a clean, classic shape tend toward Judy. Clients chasing something more current book Emma. Anyone prepping for a wedding, a formal event, or a stadium day tends to land with Judy or Kat.
Extensions and alternative hair round out the rest of the calendar. Kim's tape-in work draws clients dealing with fine hair, postpartum shedding, or density loss, while Jackie's topper consultations serve clients navigating thinning or medical hair loss with real discretion.
Building a Real Relationship With Your Stylist
The value of sticking with one stylist compounds over time in a way that's easy to underestimate. Your first appointment establishes a baseline. By your second or third, your stylist starts noticing patterns specific to your hair: how it takes color, how fast it grows, how it behaves in different weather. By your fifth or sixth visit, that knowledge is deep enough that formulas get faster and more accurate, and fewer things need to be explained from scratch each time.
Clients who stick with one stylist consistently get better, more consistent results than clients who bounce between salons, simply because the work has something to build on. That's why booking your next visit before you leave is standard practice here. Color clients typically return every 4-6 weeks, highlight and balayage clients every 8-12, cut clients every 6-8, and treatment clients on a quarterly basis.

Extended FAQ: The Deeper Questions
How long does color actually last?
Single process color and root touch-ups typically need a refresh every 4-6 weeks. Highlights hold for 8-12 weeks before regrowth becomes noticeable. Balayage stretches further, usually 12-16 weeks, since the growth pattern is intentionally soft. Fashion and vivid colors fade quickest, generally 4-8 weeks.
Will coloring damage my hair?
Done properly, no. Single process color is the gentlest chemical service. Lightening is more demanding, which is why Olaplex and K18 are worked into every one of those services. Damage more often comes from switching salons frequently, pushing too much change into one sitting, or using box dye between professional visits.
How long does a typical color appointment take?
Single process runs roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours. A root touch-up is 75-90 minutes. Partial foils take about 2 to 2.5 hours, full foils 2.5 to 3.5, and balayage 2.5 to 3.5. Color correction can run 4-8 hours and is sometimes split across two visits.
Balayage or foiled highlights, which should I choose?
Foiled highlights give more lift and a more defined, brighter pattern. Balayage is hand-painted for a softer, more lived-in look that grows out with less visible line. Plenty of clients combine the two, and a free consultation is the fastest way to figure out which fits your hair and your maintenance preferences.
How do I keep my color from fading?
Use a sulfate-free shampoo, wash every 2-3 days instead of daily, rinse with cool water at the end of a shower, apply heat protectant before styling tools, use a UV-protective leave-in, and rinse with clean water before swimming. A monthly clarifying treatment helps if your water is hard.
What does a full color transformation cost?
It depends on your starting color, your target, and your hair's length and condition, and it's always quoted honestly during a free consultation rather than sprung on you at checkout.
How do I know which stylist is right for me?
A free consultation is the fastest way to find out. You'll be matched based on your actual goals, whether that means Kim for extensions, Janet for correction, Laura for blonding, or someone else on the team.
What happens if I'm not happy with the result?
Say something. There's almost always a plan for adjusting color that's too warm, too light, too dark, or a cut that needs reshaping. Nobody should leave without speaking up first.
Can I bring a friend or family member with me?
Yes. Plenty of clients book alongside a sister, mother, daughter, or close friend, and overlapping appointment times can usually be arranged.
Do you work with clients experiencing medical hair loss?
Yes. Kim personally handles Jon Renau wig and topper consultations, with full discretion and private parking available if that's preferred.
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, in any amount, available online or in person, and they never expire.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover, debit cards, and gift cards.
What's your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours notice. Same-day cancellations and no-shows are charged 50% of the scheduled service.
Is tipping expected?
It's not required but always appreciated. Standard practice runs 18-22%, and tips can be given in cash, on card, or through Venmo.
Do you accept walk-ins?
The salon runs primarily by appointment, though same-day openings occasionally come up. Call 781-817-5077 to check availability.
What if I'm running late?
Call ahead as soon as you know. Past 15 minutes, your stylist may need to adjust or shorten the service depending on the day's schedule.
Can I bring my kids with me?
Kids are welcome as long as they're supervised and stay seated. A child with their own appointment needs an accompanying adult present.
Do you do wedding day hair?
Yes, with advance booking. Trials happen in-salon, and day-of styling is typically arranged at your venue or hotel.
How do I book my very first visit?
Online, or by calling 781-817-5077. Calling in for a first visit lets us match you with the right specialist before anything gets scheduled.

Ready for Your Next Appointment?
Color built to actually survive a New England summer, extensions that finally deliver the length you've been after, curly hair care from stylists who understand curl pattern rather than fighting it, and a team that asks real questions before picking up a single tool. That's what's waiting on Washington Street.
Kim built this salon for clients who wanted to feel genuinely heard in the chair, and nearly forty years later, that's still the standard every stylist here is trained to. It's why clients from Foxborough keep making the trip to Washington Street, appointment after appointment.
