Best Hair Salon in Hanover, MA | Kimberly Messing Hair Design
Curly hair has a way of teaching people to give up on salons. Alicia Hayward built her whole chair around reversing that, and it's a big part of why clients from Hanover keep making the trip to Kimberly Messing Hair Design's studio at 533 Washington Street in Braintree. Nine specialists work under one roof here, covering everything from color correction to hand-tied extensions to topper fittings, and the salon has been proving out its approach on Washington Street since 1986.
Serving Hanover, MA from Our Braintree Studio | 38+ Years in Business
Alicia's Chair: Where a Lot of Hanover Clients Start
Ask Alicia Hayward what she does differently and she won't lead with a technique name. She'll tell you she actually looks at the curl before she touches it. Alicia is a DevaCurl-certified specialist, trained directly through DevaCurl's program, and she spends her days working with the kind of hair that most stylists either flatten with a round brush or thin out until it loses its shape entirely. Curl, wave, coil, whatever pattern walks through the door, she cuts it dry and section by section, watching how each piece actually falls before she commits to the next cut.
A lot of the Hanover clients who end up in her chair have a familiar story: years of appointments that left them frizzy, over-thinned, or shaped for straight hair that got blown out for the photo and never looked that way again at home. Alicia's first move is usually just listening to that history, because a curl-first cut only works if it accounts for what's already been done to the hair and how the client actually wants to wear it day to day.
She's not the only reason people drive over from Hanover, but she's often the reason they book that first appointment, and owner Kim Messing makes a habit of personally greeting new clients who come through Alicia's door. That small gesture surprises people more than it should.

Why Hanover Clients Make the Trip to Washington Street
Nobody drives past three or four salons without a reason, so here's the honest version of ours.
Every Chair Is a Specialty, Not a Generic Service
This isn't a salon where any available stylist takes whoever walks in next. Color correction goes to Janet. Blonding goes to Laura. Curl work goes to Alicia. Topper and alternative hair consultations go to Jackie. You get matched to whoever has actually built a career around your specific problem, not whoever happens to be free at 2pm.
A Genuine Consultation Before Anything Happens
The chemistry starts after the conversation, not before it. Every new client gets time to explain their hair history, their routine, and what they actually want their mornings to look like, and that conversation shapes the plan instead of a plan getting handed to them.
Decisions Made With the Planet in Mind
Kim runs the business with real attention to its environmental footprint, from how products get sourced to how the salon operates day to day. It's not a marketing bullet point here, it shapes actual choices.
Depth That Took Decades to Build
Thirty-eight-plus years on the same street produced something that's hard to fake: nine specialists who trained under or alongside each other, a founder who still colors hair herself, and a client base that includes people who've been coming since the salon opened.
The Full Menu at Kimberly Messing Hair Design
Every service below comes with a real conversation first. Nothing here is a five-minute drive-through.
Hair Cut
Cutting starts with questions: how do you actually style this at home, what's working, what isn't. Then the scissors come out.
Barber's Cut — $35. Sharp, clean, low upkeep.
Kid's Cut — $35. Patient, unhurried, built for younger clients.
Haircut (Short) — $44. Precise shaping that holds its line.
Haircut (Medium) — $66. Movement and shape without giving up flexibility.
Haircut (Long) — $88. Length preserved, ends cleaned up properly.
Haircut (Extra-Long) — $110. Built to protect length while removing damage.
Shampoo and Cut — $50. A reset that leaves hair easier to manage.
Shampoo, Cut, and Blow-dry — $60. Walk out already styled.
Shampoo and Blow-dry — $35. Smooth and frizz-controlled without touching a heat tool yourself.
Perm — $105. Texture and lift that lasts.
Hair Color
Formulas here get mixed for the person in the chair, factoring in skin tone, hair history, and how New England's seasons will treat the result over the coming months.
Single Process Color — $75. Even, rich, full-head color.
Double Process Color — $120. A bigger shift: lift first, then tone.
Partial Foil — $148. Dimension focused where it's most visible.
Full Foil — $185. Multi-tonal color across the whole head.
Balayage — $220. Hand-painted, soft-growing, one of the most requested services in the salon.
Custom Foil — starting at $22 as an add-on. Targeted brightening.
Color Balance — $37. Correction for tone that's gone flat or faded.
Up-Do — $100. Styling built to hold through a full event.
Alternative Hair and Toppers
Priced After Consultation
Jackie runs these appointments personally, and she treats them with the discretion they deserve. Whether the concern is thinning, volume loss, or something more significant, the fitting gets built around the person, not pulled off a rack.

Kim leads extension work herself, matching texture, color, and density so the result reads as your own hair rather than something added on. Every appointment opens with a full assessment before any strand goes in, and it's a service that regularly pulls clients in from well outside Braintree.

What Actually Happens When You Walk In
The pace here isn't rushed. A consultation happens before a cape ever goes on, and the person doing your hair is the same person who talked through what you want, not someone handed a set of instructions from another stylist.
Clients coming from Hanover are usually surprised by how unhurried the whole visit feels. There's no pressure to add on services, no clock visibly ticking, and no sense that the schedule matters more than the conversation happening in the chair. That's a deliberate choice, not an accident of a slow day.
Massachusetts weather doesn't do anyone's hair any favors, and every recommendation, from the cut itself to the products sent home with you, gets adjusted for whatever season you're walking in during. A stylist who ignores that context is guessing. Here, it's built into the plan.

The Nine Specialists Behind Every Appointment
A quick bio only tells you so much, so here's a longer look at the people who'll actually be working on your hair.
Alicia Hayward, DevaCurl Certified Curl Specialist
Alicia trained directly with the DevaCurl team, one of a small number of stylists on the South Shore to hold that certification, and she's spent years since refining how it applies to real, walk-in-off-the-street hair rather than textbook curl patterns. Curly, wavy, and coily textures all get treated as their own category here rather than a variation on straight-hair cutting.
Her method is dry cutting, curl by curl, watching each section settle into its natural shape before moving to the next. Clients who've spent years being told their curl "just does that" tend to leave her chair with a very different opinion of their own hair. The conversation before the scissors matters just as much: how you actually wear it, how much time you're willing to spend styling it, what's realistic between visits.
Kim Messing, Owner and Master Colorist
Kim has been behind the chair since 1986, and four decades of formulating color has given her an instinct for pigment that's hard to teach. She holds board certification in color, a credential that requires ongoing testing across formulation, correction, and theory, and one that relatively few working colorists ever pursue past their first several years in the industry.
She's also Hot Heads certified for tape-in extensions, work she still handles personally, and she keeps up continuing education with Goldwell, Redken, Keratin Complex, and Olaplex so the salon's formulas evolve as the products do. Every stylist currently on staff has trained with her directly or under someone she trained, which is part of why the standard holds no matter which chair you end up in.
Jackie Shaughnessy, Senior Stylist and Cutting Specialist
Thirty-eight years behind the scissors, and Jackie's cuts are known for growing out cleanly instead of falling apart in a few weeks. Every section gets full attention; nothing gets rushed through.
She's also become the salon's specialist in curly cutting alongside Alicia, working dry and curl by curl for clients whose pattern needs that kind of patience. Beyond cutting, Jackie runs the alternative hair and topper consultations, bringing the same careful, unhurried approach to a category of service that depends heavily on trust.
Maureen Lamie, Master Stylist and Foiling Specialist
Twenty-five-plus years of foiling and balayage work have made Maureen the person other stylists study when they want to improve their own placement. She reads face shape, growth pattern, and how a client actually lives before the first foil goes in, which is the difference between highlights that flatter and highlights that just brighten.
Her balayage is entirely hand-painted, designed to avoid the harsh demarcation line that shows up with rushed application. She's frequently the one handling complex color histories, where a client's hair has been through several different processes and needs a strategy rather than a single formula.
Janet Layden, Color Correction Specialist
Janet is the person to call when a color has gone sideways somewhere else: uneven tone, stubborn banding, a lift that won't cooperate, a box-dye situation that needs real technical unwinding. Color correction demands fluency in lift levels, toners, fillers, and bond chemistry, and it's the discipline she's spent her career mastering.
She's just as capable building color from scratch, particularly the layered, dimensional look that reads as effortless without being flat or one-note. Clients who've been burned by a rushed color appointment elsewhere tend to end up in Janet's chair eventually.
Laura Blaikie, Blonding Specialist
There's a meaningful gap between a stylist who can do highlights competently and one who's built a specialty around blonding specifically, and Laura sits firmly in the second group. Her lightening work is bright without going brassy, dimensional without looking stripey, using a blend of foil and hand-painting depending on what the hair and the client's goals call for.
Every lightening service she does runs through Olaplex and K18, protecting the internal bond structure while she pushes for lift. Clients going significantly lighter from a dark base tend to specifically request her for that reason.
Emma Browning, Contemporary Cuts and Vivid Color
Emma brings the newest technical training on the team and stays current on whatever's trending, whether that's a French bob, textured shag, or butterfly layers pulled from a saved photo. The technical foundation underneath keeps those trend-driven shapes from looking dated in six months.
She also handles the salon's vivid and fashion color work using Pulp Riot, formulated to hold its saturation longer than typical fashion color lines, so a pink or pastel doesn't fade to a dull memory of itself within a couple of washes.
Judy, Senior Stylist and Blowout Specialist
Twenty-five-plus years of styling experience have made Judy the person booked ahead of weddings, galas, and anything requiring hair that holds up under real pressure. Pin curls, finger waves, voluminous waves, French twists: the full range of classic technique lives in her hands.
Her cutting work is equally in demand, particularly among clients who want a polished shape that doesn't require heavy daily styling to look intentional.
Kat, Texture and Updo Specialist
Kat handles the styling work that goes beyond a curling iron: braids, updos, twists, and ponytails built to survive a full night out. Brides and event clients specifically seek her out for that durability.
She's also steadily building a reputation for color work with brunette clients, particularly dimensional, polished results, and clients consistently mention how much warmth she brings to the appointment itself.

What's on the Retail Wall
Every product on the shelf here is something the team actually uses in the chair first. Nothing gets stocked purely to fill space, and every purchase comes with real instructions on how to use it.
K18
Peptide technology that rebuilds the internal hair structure rather than coating over damage. Used through the salon's chemical services, with the leave-in mask recommended for anyone who's been lightened or chemically processed.
Goldwell
One of the salon's primary color lines, backed by take-home care built to extend that color: Color Revive for fading tone, Kerasilk for smoothing, Dualsenses for everyday maintenance across hair types.
Redken
All Soft, Color Extend Magnetics, and Acidic Bonding Concentrate anchor the retail styling shelf, recommended for clients who want dependable everyday performance backed by real formulation science.
Keratin Complex
The line supporting the salon's smoothing treatments, along with the sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that extend those results at home.
Olaplex
Bond-building technology used in-service and sent home as the Number 3 hair perfector, with the Number 4 and 5 shampoo and conditioner maintaining that bond repair between visits.
Also on the Shelf
Soma, Zenagen for thinning hair, Tri Design for styling control, Living Proof for frizz management, Aluram for clean beauty formulations, Design Me for performance styling, Amika for color-treated hair, Pureology for color protection, Milk_shake for moisture, Hot Like Me for heat protection, Revitalash for lash growth, ECRU New York for protective styling, FHI Heat for tools, Wahl for clipper work, and Jon Renau for wig and topper systems. Every recommendation comes from your actual stylist, not a shelf tag.
The Way This Salon Operates: One Stylist, Full Attention
Plenty of salons run on volume, stacking appointments and splitting a stylist's attention across two or three chairs at once to keep the schedule tight. That model works fine for throughput. It's rougher on the client and on the actual quality of the work.
Here, your stylist works on you and only you, start to finish. Color doesn't get handed off to whoever's free to process it. Nobody's cut gets interrupted so the stylist can start someone else's foils. Whatever's happening in that chair has somebody's undivided attention the entire time.
That structure also makes honesty easier. If a request isn't going to work with your hair's current condition, you'll hear that upfront, along with what needs to happen first to get there. If the finished result isn't something you're happy with, the plan is to fix it, not to send you out the door and hope you don't come back with complaints. That's been true since 1986, not just something added to the website recently.
Understanding Why South Shore Hair Behaves the Way It Does
Hair doesn't exist in a vacuum. The water running through the pipes, the humidity rolling in off the coast, and the brutal swing between summer and winter all leave a mark on it, and a stylist who ignores that is only solving half the problem.
Hard Water Buildup
Water across this part of Massachusetts runs hard, which means calcium, iron, and magnesium slowly deposit onto the hair shaft over time. The result shows up as dullness, brassy undertones in lightened hair, color that fades faster than it should, and shampoo that seems to stop lathering the way it used to. A chelating treatment paired with the right take-home products usually reverses it within a few washes.
Humidity and Frizz
Summer humidity works its way into the hair shaft and lifts the cuticle, which is why frizz shows up even in clients who've never dealt with it before. The fix usually combines a cut designed to work with that moisture instead of fighting it, anti-humidity styling products, and, for some clients, a keratin smoothing service that addresses the frizz pattern more directly.
Salt Air and Coastal Exposure
Time spent near the water means salt exposure, and salt is drying, both to the hair itself and to color, which can start looking dull or slightly gray-toned. Clients who spend a lot of time near the coast typically need a more aggressive moisture routine and a shampoo built to remove salt buildup without stripping tone.
Winter Damage
Cold outdoor air, dry indoor heat, and months of hats and scarves add up to real mechanical damage: breakage from friction, dryness from forced-air heating, static from low humidity. Product recommendations shift every fall specifically to get ahead of it before it starts.
Adjusting Color by Season
The same color reads differently depending on the light and the season. A blonde that looks striking under summer sun can feel harsh by December, and a deep brunette that feels right in winter can feel heavy come July. Plenty of clients adjust their tone twice a year for exactly this reason, and it's a normal part of the planning conversation here.
What Actually Happens in a Free Consultation
Every new client gets a complimentary consultation before any service gets booked, no pressure attached. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and covers real ground.
- Your hair's history. What's been done to it, when, and how it responded.
- Its current condition. A straightforward read on porosity, integrity, and what it can realistically handle right now.
- Your daily routine. How often you wash, what products you're already using, how much time you actually spend styling.
- Your lifestyle. Exercise, sun exposure, swimming, work environment, sleep habits.
- Visual references. Photos of what you're after, and just as usefully, photos of what you want to avoid.
- What's realistically achievable. One visit versus a series of appointments to get there safely.
- Cost, upfront. No surprise number at checkout.
- A maintenance plan. What it actually takes to keep the result looking right until your next visit.
Clients regularly say the consultation itself clears up more confusion than years of appointments elsewhere ever did. It's treated as the actual foundation of the relationship, not a formality before the real appointment starts.
Serving the Hanover Community
Hanover is a quiet, residential South Shore town, and it sits a short drive from our Washington Street studio in Braintree. We're not going to pretend the salon is located in Hanover itself, or invent landmarks and street names to sound more local than we are. What we can say honestly is that plenty of Hanover clients have decided the trip is worth it, and the drive over is an easy one along familiar South Shore roads.
The character of the town is part of what makes it a good fit for this kind of salon relationship. Hanover residents tend to value the same things our longtime clients do: a place that remembers their name, their hair history, and their preferences without needing to ask twice. New England's seasons hit Hanover the same way they hit Braintree, which means the same hard-water, humidity, salt-air, and winter-damage conversations apply just as directly to Hanover hair as to hair grown up the road.
Is the Drive From Hanover Worth It?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a quick trim from whoever's available, there's no reason to drive past a closer option. If you want a specialist, an unhurried consultation, and a stylist who's going to remember your hair's history the next time you sit down, the trip tends to pay for itself.
Retention here runs high. Clients who book once tend to keep coming back for years, sometimes decades, and a meaningful number of them are making the same short drive from Hanover and nearby towns rather than settling for whatever's five minutes closer. Free parking, evening appointments Tuesday through Thursday, and Saturday hours make the logistics easy for anyone balancing a work week.
What Clients Book Most
Color leads, particularly balayage, highlights, and correction work. Between Kim's formulation background, Maureen's foiling, Janet's correction expertise, and Laura's blonding specialty, that's four different color specialists under one roof.
Cutting follows close behind. Curly-haired clients specifically seek out Alicia and Jackie for dry, curl-by-curl work. Clients chasing a classic, polished shape book Jackie. Clients wanting something more current book Emma. Anyone with an event on the calendar tends to land with Judy or Kat.
Extensions, alternative hair, and specialty treatments round out the rest. Kim's tape-in work draws clients dealing with fine hair, postpartum thinning, or general density loss, while keratin smoothing services and Jon Renau toppers serve clients managing frizz or more significant hair loss.
Why Long-Term Stylist Relationships Actually Matter
The value of sticking with one stylist compounds over time in a way that's easy to underestimate. A first visit sets a baseline. By the second or third, your stylist has started learning how your specific hair lifts, deposits, and grows out. By the fifth or sixth, that knowledge is close to intuitive, built from repetition rather than guesswork.
Clients who commit to a single stylist consistently get better, more predictable results than clients who bounce between salons, because nothing has to get relearned from scratch each visit. That's why rebooking before you leave is standard practice here: color clients typically return every 4 to 6 weeks, highlight and balayage clients every 8 to 12, cuts every 6 to 8, and specialty treatments on a quarterly rhythm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Hanover clients drive to a Braintree salon?
Mostly for specialists they can't easily find closer to home: a board-certified colorist as owner, a DevaCurl-certified curl expert, and a team where every chair covers a distinct specialty instead of a little bit of everything.
What does a haircut cost?
Barber's and Kid's Cuts run $35. Short is $44, medium $66, long $88, extra-long $110. Shampoo and Cut is $50, Shampoo/Cut/Blow-dry is $60, Shampoo and Blow-dry is $35, and Perms start at $105.
What does color cost?
Single Process starts at $75, Double Process at $120, Partial Foil at $148, Full Foil at $185, Balayage at $220. Custom Foil add-ons start at $22, Color Balance at $37, Up-Do at $100.
Do you offer hair extensions?
Yes. Kim personally handles every extension consultation and installation.
What about toppers or alternative hair?
Jackie leads those appointments, priced individually after a private consultation.
Is there someone who specializes in curly hair?
Yes, Alicia is DevaCurl certified and cuts dry, curl by curl, and Jackie also brings deep experience with curl work.
What do tinting and waxing services cost?
Eyebrow Wax is $20, Brow Tint is $20, and Lip and Chin Wax is $25.
How do I book an appointment?
Book online anytime, or call 781-817-5077. Booking ahead matters most for color, curly cuts, and extension work.
What are your hours?
Tuesday and Wednesday 9-7, Thursday 9-8, Friday and Saturday 9-4, closed Sunday and Monday.
Do you work with all hair types?
Yes. Fine, thick, curly, color-treated, previously damaged, all of it.
Extended FAQ: The Deeper Questions
How long does color typically last?
Single process and root touch-ups usually need a refresh every 4-6 weeks. Highlights hold for 8-12 weeks. Balayage stretches further, often 12-16 weeks, because the regrowth is designed to be soft. Vivid and fashion colors fade fastest, generally within 4-8 weeks.
Will coloring damage my hair?
Not when it's done correctly. Single process color is the gentlest chemical service in the building. Lightening is more demanding, which is why Olaplex and K18 are used throughout it. Real damage tends to show up in hair that's bounced between different salons or been box-dyed between professional visits.
How long does a color appointment take?
Single process runs roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours. Root touch-ups run 75-90 minutes. Partial foils run about 2 to 2.5 hours, full foils 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and balayage similarly. Color correction can run 4 to 8 hours and sometimes gets split across separate visits.
Balayage or highlights, which should I choose?
Highlights are foiled for stronger lift and a crisper pattern. Balayage is hand-painted for a softer look with an easier regrowth line. A consultation is the fastest way to figure out which fits your hair and how much upkeep you're willing to commit to.
How do I keep my color from fading fast?
Sulfate-free shampoo, spacing out washes to every 2-3 days, a cool final rinse, heat protectant before styling tools, a UV-protective leave-in, and a monthly clarifying treatment if your water runs hard. All of it adds up.
What does a full color transformation cost?
It depends entirely on your starting point, your target, and your hair's length and density, and it always gets quoted after a free consultation, not guessed at over the phone.
How do I know which stylist is right for me?
Start with a free consultation. The team will match you based on what your hair actually needs, whether that's Janet for a correction, Laura for ongoing blonding, or Alicia for curl work, rather than whoever has an opening.
What happens if I'm not happy with the result?
Say something before you leave, or call after. There's a process for adjusting color that's too warm, too dark, or too light, and for reshaping a cut that missed the mark. Nobody's expected to just live with it.
Can I bring a friend or family member to my appointment?
Yes, and overlapping appointments for two or more people can usually be arranged with enough notice.
Do you work with clients experiencing medical hair loss?
Yes. Kim personally handles Jon Renau wig and topper consultations, with discretion and private parking available if that's helpful.
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes, in any amount, purchased online or in-salon, and they don't expire.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, debit, and gift cards.
What's your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours notice. Same-day cancellations and no-shows are charged 50% of the scheduled service.
Is tipping expected?
It's not required but appreciated, and 18-22% is standard practice. Cash, card, and Venmo are all accepted for tips.
Do you take walk-ins?
The salon runs primarily by appointment, though same-day openings do occasionally come up. Call 781-817-5077 to check availability.
What if I'm running late?
Call ahead if you can. Past about 15 minutes, your stylist may need to shorten the service or reschedule, depending on the rest of the day's bookings.
Can I bring my kids along?
Yes, as long as they're able to stay seated and supervised. A child getting their own service should be accompanied by an adult.
Do you handle wedding day styling?
Yes, with advance booking. Trial runs happen in-salon, and day-of styling is typically done at the venue or hotel.
How should I book my very first visit?
Booking by phone for a first appointment lets us match you with the right specialist before anything gets scheduled, though online booking works too.

Your Hair Is Worth the Short Drive
A curl specialist who actually understands curl. A colorist with nearly four decades of formulation experience. Extension work that looks like it grew there. That's the case for making the short drive from Hanover to Washington Street.
Alicia, Kim, and the rest of the team built this salon around the idea that hair care works better when someone actually specializes in your specific problem instead of offering a little of everything. Hanover clients who've made the switch tend to say the same thing: it was worth finding out for themselves.
We've been on Washington Street for more than 38 years, and we're not planning on changing that anytime soon.
