What Should You Know Before Chemical Services in Braintree?

Whether your hair can safely handle a major color service depends on what has happened to it chemically over the past several years, not just on how it looks or feels right now. That history is recorded in the structure of your hair and it determines every formulation decision we make before we mix a single bowl.

Let me walk you through how we actually assess that and what happens when the answer requires a different approach.

What Chemical Services Actually Do to Your Hair

Your hair has three layers. The cuticle is the outermost protective layer made of overlapping flat cells. The cortex is the interior where your hair's protein structure and natural color pigment live.

Chemical services work by raising the pH of the hair to open the cuticle and allow the formula to reach the cortex. Your hair's natural pH sits between 4.5 and 5.5, which keeps the cuticle sealed flat. A lightener or permanent color formula operates at a much higher alkaline pH, which forces the cuticle open.

Once inside the cortex, the formula does its work and then we use a professional neutralizer to bring the pH back down and reseal the cuticle. The structural consequence of repeated chemical services is cumulative. Each time the cortex is accessed, some degree of internal bond disruption occurs.

Why Your Hair's Chemical History Matters More Than Its Current Appearance

Hair is not living tissue and it does not regenerate. If your hair falls past your shoulders, the ends are three to four years old and carry the chemical record of everything applied to them in that time.

A client whose ends have had box dye, bleach, and repeated heat styling applied over three years has a structurally different hair shaft than a client with virgin ends of the same length. Applying professional lightener over that accumulated history produces a different chemical reaction and requires a different formulation approach.

The Five Things We Assess Before Any Lightening Service

Elasticity is the first and most important indicator. On a wet strand under gentle tension, healthy hair stretches slightly and returns to its original length. Porosity tells us how the hair will absorb the formula. High-porosity hair absorbs quickly and unevenly, which affects developer strength and application approach. Low-porosity hair resists absorption and may need a modified technique to achieve the desired lift.

Texture changes are an indicator of cortex compromise. If hair that was naturally curly has become progressively straighter and limp at the ends, the cortex has lost structural integrity.

Proceeding with the full lift she wanted would have caused breakage that would have taken months to correct.
