argan oil actually works

Why We Still Reach for Argan Oil at Our Braintree Salon After 30 Years

When clients sit in our chairs at Kimberly Messing Hair Design and ask why their hair feels dry, frizzy, or dull no matter what they do at home, argan oil comes up in almost every consultation. After more than 30 years of working with every hair texture that walks through our Washington Street doors, we have seen which ingredients deliver on the marketing and which ones quietly disappoint. Argan oil sits firmly in the first group.

We are not talking about a trend. We are talking about a Moroccan oil that has been used on hair for generations, and one we lean on as colorists and stylists because it behaves predictably across single process color, double process work, foils, balayage, and extension maintenance. We see the damage from unprotected heat styling on new clients every week, especially on lightened ends. Argan oil helps prevent that damage before it starts.

Why Argan Oil Works on Real Hair, Not Just in Ads

Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants. In practical salon terms, that means three things. It smooths the cuticle so light reflects evenly (which is why hair looks glossier after one use). It adds slip without weighing fine hair down the way heavier oils do. And it puts a thin protective barrier between your strands and the daily abuse of heat tools, sun, and hard water.

We see the difference most clearly on color clients. After a dimensional foil service or a custom balayage, the cuticle has been opened and lifted. The lighter your end result, the more porous those strands are. Argan oil helps lay that cuticle back down, which is why color holds better, brassiness creeps in slower, and the tone we built in the chair lasts longer between visits.

The Benefits We Actually Notice in the Salon

There are a lot of claims floating around about argan oil. These are the ones we can stand behind because we watch them play out in our chairs every week.

Frizz control that lasts past lunchtime. New England humidity is not kind to hair, especially in summer. A few drops of argan oil through mid-lengths and ends before a blow-dry helps the cuticle stay flat once you walk back outside. Clients commuting up Route 3 or running errands across Braintree, Holbrook, and Quincy notice their style holds far longer.

Heat protection without the crunch. We see the damage from unprotected heat styling on new clients every week, especially on lightened ends. Argan oil is not a substitute for a true heat protectant, but layered underneath one, it gives an extra buffer. Hair feels softer after styling, not stiffer.

Shine that looks like healthy hair, not product buildup. A lot of shine sprays sit on top of the hair and create a glassy look that fades by the end of the day. Argan oil absorbs in. The shine reads as condition, which is what we want for polished, finished hair.

Scalp comfort for clients with dry skin. A small amount worked into a dry scalp the night before a wash can ease tightness and flaking. We do not recommend this for clients with fine hair who get oily quickly, but for textured hair, alternative hair wearers, and clients with topper attachment points, it can make a real difference.

Extension and topper longevity. Our extension and alternative hair clients are protecting an investment. Argan oil helps keep the hair, whether it is yours or applied, soft and movable. We coach clients through this in their fitting consultations because the wrong products will shorten the life of any custom piece.

How to Use Argan Oil Without Overdoing It

The most common mistake we see is too much, too often, applied in the wrong place. Argan oil is potent. A little goes far.

For most clients, two or three drops warmed between the palms and worked through damp mid-lengths and ends is the right starting dose. Fine hair may need only one drop. Coarser or longer hair can take more. Avoid the scalp unless you are specifically treating dryness there, and avoid the roots on fine hair entirely.

The other piece is the shampoo you pair it with. We are firm believers in starting with a clean, conditioning base so the oil has healthy hair to work with. Advantage Argan Shampoo is one we keep stocked because it is sulfate-free, color-safe, and formulated to work alongside the argan treatments our clients use at home. We reach for it specifically because it does not strip toner from our foil clients between six-week visits, and our extension wearers can use it without drying out the bonds. Clients who switch to it from harsher drugstore shampoos almost always tell us their color looks fresher between visits and their ends feel less brittle.

When Argan Oil Is Not the Right Answer

We believe in being straight with clients. Argan oil is not a fix for every problem.

If your hair is breaking off, snapping when you brush it wet, or feeling gummy after color, you are dealing with structural damage that no oil will solve. That is a consultation conversation, not a product conversation. We may need to look at a bond treatment, a trim, or a temporary pause on lightening services. Putting oil on broken hair just hides the issue for a few hours.

If you have very fine, oily hair, daily argan oil application can make your roots look greasy by mid-afternoon. In that case, use it once or twice a week on the ends only, or skip it entirely in favor of a lightweight leave-in.

And if your color is fading fast or pulling warm, argan oil helps, but it is not a replacement for the right toning shampoo or a glaze appointment at the salon. We build maintenance plans into every color consultation for this reason.

Building Argan Oil Into Your Routine the Right Way

The clients who get the most out of argan oil are the ones who use it consistently in small amounts, paired with a thoughtful wash and style routine. A few practical habits we recommend:

Apply to damp hair before styling, not to dry hair after, unless you are smoothing a single flyaway. Wet hair absorbs the oil. Dry hair just coats with it.

Focus on mid-lengths and ends. Those are the oldest, most porous, most damaged parts of your hair. The roots take care of themselves.

Use it the night before a wash as an overnight pre-treatment once a week, especially if you are between color appointments and your ends are feeling tired.

Keep it away from your foundation and your pillowcase. A silk pillowcase helps with both.
