Rough-Dry First, Brush Second
The single most impactful change most clients can make is waiting until the hair is approximately 70 to 80 percent dry before picking up a round brush. Wet hair is at its most fragile and most heavy.
Pulling a brush through soaking wet strands causes breakage and the weight of the water actively fights against any volume you are trying to build.
Rough-drying is simple. Flip your head forward or use your fingers to lift the roots while moving the dryer continuously over the scalp and lengths. Use medium heat rather than the highest setting. Once the hair feels mostly dry to the touch, section it and bring in the round brush to smooth and shape.

When the At-Home Blowout Has Limits
I want to be honest about when technique improvements will not fully solve the problem. If your hair is significantly damaged from color processing or heat exposure, the cuticle may be too compromised to hold a smooth result regardless of the technique or the dryer.

Why does the back of my hair always look messy after a blowout?
The back is the hardest section to reach and most people try to dry it by reaching behind the head, which is uncomfortable and produces inconsistent tension on the brush. Once the back sections are mostly dry, pull them forward over your shoulders and dry them pointing the nozzle downward. It is significantly easier on your arms and produces a much smoother result.
Why does my blowout fall flat immediately at the roots?
The most common cause is starting the round brush on wet hair rather than rough-dried hair. The weight of the water pulls the root volume down before it can set. Rough-dry the roots specifically until they feel almost completely dry before building any volume with the brush. Is the cool shot button actually necessary?
Yes. Heat shapes the hair and cool air locks that shape in place. Releasing a section while it is still warm allows the shape to relax immediately rather than holding.
Why does my blowout frizz even with product?
